Wingliner in 1, 2, 3

Updated: Dec 6

These are the easiest steps to wingliner I have ever come across in my 16 years of being a professional makeup artist. I'm here to spill the secrets and make wingliner easy and painless.

This is made for anyone, at any skill level, with any eye shape- even hooded and mono lids, I gotcha girl!

All you need is 3 simple things that you probably already have in your makeup collection. If you don't, check the links at the bottom to see products and where to buy them. Spending can be kept to a minimum of $34-$82 because less is more.

Tools to use...

  1. Eyeshadow Primer- stopping smudging and transfer (I'm using Nars Tinted Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base in Medium)

  2. Flat Liner Definer Brush this brush is a square shape with a sharp flat top (I'm using Morphe M432)

  3. Dark Brown or Black Matte Eyeshadow (I'm using Nars Single Shadow in Coconut Grove)

  4. This is optional! Your favorite eyeliner product- pencil, liquid pen, gel liner, or stick to using eyeshadow as eyeliner.

Now, for the technique, skill up!

  1. Pat 2 small dots on each eyelid close to your top lashline. Blend upwards towards your brows and outwards.

2. Softly press your flat definer or angle brush against the eyeshadow, from one side of the brush to the other side. Tap off any excess product (this will stop any fall-out). Stamp the Push & Wiggle brush at the highest point of your eye.

Start with the side you struggle with, that way it will be easier to replicate.

Stamp the eyeshadow along your lashline at the same highpoint height of your eyes as you go along towards the outer corner of your eyes. After 2-3 eyeshadow stamps, re-press your brush into the eyeshadow and tap/pat off any excess product.

3. Time to focus on the "wing" part of the wingliner. For this, look at your lower lashline with your eyes straight ahead, make an imaginary line that continues past the outer corner of your eye. Apply 1 stamp to get the bottom line of your wingliner.

4. Link the end of the bottom wingliner line with the end of the top lashline line. Make sure you are looking straight ahead into the mirror.

Now you have the outline of your wingliner you can either fill-in with the eyeshadow or grab your favourite liquid/gel eyeliner!

Tidy up wingliner without makeup remover!

Tools:
1. Water based face primer
2. Cue tips
3. Magnifying mirror

Using a water-based face primer (no silicone or silica in the ingredients) and a couple or 10 clean cue tips.

Pat a tiny amount of primer onto the cue tip. Sweep in an outwards motion against the edges of the liner to erase fall-out, messy edges and make wings symmetrical. Follow with concealer or foundation if there's missing makeup patches!

Elevate your look

  • Tinted eye primer

Stop smudging and transfer of your eyeliner and any eyelid products applied. When I first started in makeup I would use foundation or concealer on my eyelids and 5 mins later it would crease into my eyelid crease (argh!), even with setting powder. This can happen even if you use waterproof concealer because it depends on your eye shape and how many oils your skin produces. Tinted eyeshadow primer will solve the issue of eyelids looking lighter in tone and any veins showing.

  • Waterproof/smudgeproof pencil liner

For your tightline. This will complete the wingliner look by thickening the lashes, giving the appearance of fuller lashes and more of a cat eye look. Tightline? This is the small thin line tucked under your top lashline.

  • Nude/flesh colour pencil liner

Want to make your eyes look bigger? This is a magical product that instantly opens up the eyes to give an appearance of bigger and well-rested eyes. Trace the pencil along your waterline (lower lashline, tucked above your lower lashes).
